Winter Home Renovations You Should Consider

Winter is an ideal time of year to make some home improvements. With the weather being less than desirable (for some), there’s less competition with contractors, and you don’t have to worry about working around the sun’s schedule. Here are six winter home renovations that can help make your house more comfortable and energy efficient during these cold months:

Sealing and Insulating

Sealing and insulating your home is a great way to increase its energy efficiency, and is an important step for winter renovations. The first thing you should do when insulating your home is to make sure that there are no gaps or holes in the attic floor or on the roof.

Next, ensure that all the windows in your house have been properly sealed and aren’t letting cold air through them during the colder months. Don’t forget about doors either; they should also be well-insulated so that they don’t let cold air through while you’re trying to keep warm inside!

Replace Old Hardware

It’s never too late in the year to make sure your home is as cozy and efficient as possible. It’s easy to forget about the little things that could add up over time, but they can keep your home looking good and feeling great!

Consider replacing door knobs, handles, and the like. It’s also a good idea to take a look at the weather stripping around your doors and windows. And most importantly, upgrade your plumbing fixtures! New plumbing fixtures will use water more efficiently, which will help reduce your impact on the environment while saving you money in the long run.

Clean Your Furnace and Replace the Filter

The furnace is probably one of the most important appliances in your home. Ideally, it should be cleaned once a year, before winter really sets in, but if time got away from you, don’t worry. Cleaning a furnace only takes two to three hours and can help keep your family warm and cozy.

Cleaning your furnace and replacing the filter (if necessary) also has the benefit of making it more energy efficient and helping you save more on that energy bill.

Upgrade Your Lighting

Replace your incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. LED bulbs are more energy efficient and last longer than their incandescent counterparts, making them a worthwhile investment for any household. Even though they cost more upfront, LED lights are still a good choice because of their efficiency: they consume much less power than CFLs, last longer, and emit much less heat.

Repair or Replace Your Water Heater

If you’re having problems with your water heater or it is more than 10 years old, it’s better to replace it. Making sure your water heater is in top condition is especially important in the winter. In addition, you should also check if your current system has any leaks, either from the tank itself or from a pipe connected to the hot water supply tank. If so, these leaks should be fixed immediately before replacing anything else.
